Safer Internet use for children has hit the headlines in a disturbing week with the release of the Australian Federal Police report showing that Children as young as 4 are now at risk on the internet. It is a timely reminder to look at the access we allow children and how we supervise the time allowed on devices.
Most parents will admit that we sometimes use the internet as a babysitter while we try to swallow a few mouthfuls of dinner or shop in peace, but what tools can we use which will make this a less worrying habit.The internet is an evolving technology which constantly presents new tools and ways to work. This generation who have grown up with the medium, are particularly nimble when exploring new apps, tools and sites. As parents we need to be aware of our childrens actions.
The following are tips you can use to increase safety:
- Know the device your children are using
- Know how your children are using the device
- Know what Parental Controls are available. Parental controls are designed to manage how children can use their devices in order to protect them from inappropriate or harmful content. You can restrict access to certain apps, games or websites. It can also turn the camera off and select the settings you want on the device including privacy and location. - Use a child friendly search engine like Kiddle, or content providers like KIDOZ, ABC kids or YouTube Kids.
- Check that games, movies and websites are appropriate for your child's age group.
- Block in-app purchases and one click payments on the device.
